Funds available through state program

January 08, 1999

ANNAPOLIS - Washington County government or community groups can apply for grants to improve highway landscaping, Gov. Parris N. Glendening announced Thursday.

The State Highway Administration will review individual projects and decide how to distribute the $75,000 statewide, Glendening said.

Local governments, civic groups and garden clubs can provide the labor to plant the landscaping or provide the material for the State Highway Administration to plant.

For information about qualification requirements and application forms, organizations can call 1-410-545-8640.

The money for the grants is part of the federal government's $8 million Transportation Enhancement Program.

In the past, the program has helped to purchase historic scenic easements in Washington County, Glendening said.

"The success of this program is due to our partnership with fine organizations throughout Maryland, ranging from the Boy Scouts of America to recreational clubs and community groups. This is Smart Growth at its best," Glendening said.
