Trust Co. sponsors school closing line

January 05, 1999

Finding out if nasty weather has caused schools to be closed or to open later than usual is as easy as making a telephone call.

Hagerstown Trust Co. sponsors a weather line forecast service at 301-733-3636.

The Washington County Board of Education recently began adding a message to the hotline on days of inclement weather, according to School Board spokeswoman Donna Messina.

The recorded message gives the date, time, temperature and forecast. On days when the weather is bad, Messina's recorded voice will then provide information on "if schools have been delayed or canceled or whatever the situation is," she said. "We just pray it's going to handle the volume of calls."

There are other ways of getting updates. Messina encourages parents to listen to local radio stations in the morning. Those with Internet access can check the School Board's Web site at www.wcboe.k12.md.us and click on "emergency closings."

Messina said she calls the site's Web master before calling radio stations, so the site is updated early.
