Sharpsburg council OKs festival route

January 05, 1999

SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Town Council members voted 5-0 on Monday night to approve a proposed traffic route through town during next fall's Heritage Festival, as long as fire and rescue officials approve it.

The route will be changed if town fire and rescue officials think it will affect response time to emergencies, said Vice Mayor Sidney Gale.

The proposed route calls for closing the first block of West Main Street. The first block of East Main Street would be kept open to accommodate the businesses in that block.

Ronnie DeLauney, treasurer for the Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Co. Inc., said there might be concern about allowing two-way traffic and parking on North Mechanic Street. He said he would have the fire chief review the route.

The only street that would be restricted to one-way traffic would be Hall Street, which would be southbound.

The Heritage Festival will be held on Sept. 17-19.

Councilman Hal Spielman was absent during the vote.
