25 city streets to be repaved in '99, 2000

January 04, 1999|By JULIE E. GREENE

Hagerstown residents along 25 city streets are being encouraged to get any utility upgrades and repair curbs and sidewalks before their streets are repaved during the next two summers.

City officials want residents who are considering gas service installation or water or sewer service upgrades to get the work done before their street is scheduled to be repaved so newly paved roads aren't torn up.

Residents whose streets are being resurfaced this summer and who need to fix curbs or sidewalks should have received notices from the city last January, said Assistant City Engineer Rodney Tissue.

Notices will be sent this January to residents who need curbs or sidewalks repaired along streets that will be repaved in the summer of 2000, Tissue said.

Some roads with a thick layer of asphalt will be milled before repaving begins. Milling involves grinding about an inch off the blacktop to keep the curb close to the same level.

All of the streets to be repaved in the summer of 2000 will be partially milled, Tissue said.

The city has $250,000 budgeted for this summer's repaving project. Tissue recommended City Council members budget $170,000 in fiscal 2000-2001 for the 2000 overlay project.
