Deadline Monday to enter 2 local scholarship pageants

The Board of Directors of the Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation is extending an invitation to young women between the ages of 18 and 24 by September 1999, to compete in both upcoming pageants.

The deadline to enter is Monday, Jan. 4.

Miss Washington County Scholarship Pageant will be Saturday, March 6, 1999, at 7 p.m. at Kepler Theater on the campus of Hagerstown Community College.

To compete in the Miss Washington County Scholarship Pageant, a contestant must have been a resident of Washington County for at least one year.

Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, March 20, 1999, at 7 p.m. at Hancock High School. Contestants in this pageant must live, work or attend school in Garrett, Allegany or Washington counties.


The four areas of competition are interview, eveningwear, physical fitness in swimsuit and talent. Participation offers an opportunity to win scholarships and other awards. There is no entrance fee.

All interested contestants will be required to attend an orientation Saturday, Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 S. Mulberry St.. Heather Davis, Miss Maryland 1998, will speak at the orientation.

Both of these pageants are part of the Miss America Scholarship Program, which is the largest scholarship program in the world for young women, last year awarding more than $38 million in scholarships on the local, state and national levels.

The winners of Miss Washington County and Miss Western Maryland Scholarship pageants will represent these areas at the Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant to be held in Hagerstown in June at the Maryland Theatre.

The current Miss Washington County is Amanda Klugh of Boonsboro and the current Miss Western Maryland is Toni Rickard of Hagerstown.
