Mail Call

December 30, 1998

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"As your Daily Mail paper carrier in the Orchard Hills area on the following streets; Old Colony, Indian Cottage, Woodland Heights, Sherbrooke, Weber Way, Grandview, Rockcliff, Royal Road, Petmar Circle, Maugans Ave., Pennsylvania Ave. and Spriggs Road. I would like to thank those that gave a Christmas gift. It sure is appreciated and I will continue to try to give first-class service. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, from your carrier."

"Why isn't anyone in the Washington County Park Department doing anything about the beaver problem at Devil's Backbone? Beavers have already killed 15 to 20 large trees along the Antietam Creek there and are well on their way to killing all of them. Imagine Devil's Backbone without trees. That is what it will be like this coming summer unless someone immediately starts protecting the remaining trees and getting rid of the beavers. Thank you."

"Yes, if you are missing a cat wearing a green collar, call 301-733-2830. Thank you."

"Happy New Year to my blue-eyed baby. I love you, dear. May we be together in 1999."

"I would like to say something about prices. All prices are at a 40-year low. But the pork prices in the stores and butcher shops are still at a 40-year high. These butchers and stores are making a big profit but farmers are losing money. This isn't fair. Thank you."

"I shop at one of the best supermarkets in Washington County. All of the products they sell are first class and the cashiers are friendly. There is only one problem that I wish the manager would consider. We elderly people, especially the ones who don't drive, depend on other kind people for transportation. When we finish our grocery shopping before they do and go through the cashiers we have to stand and wait on our friends. We get tired, some are crippled and it would be nice if they would put some chairs in the wide space for us to relax and rest. We would appreciate it. An elderly customer. Thank you."

"Yes, I'm going to switch from being a Democrat to a Republican after watching the disgraceful conduct of the Democrats in the impeachment process. They allow this President Clinton to do what he wants and I feel that all they want to do is slap him on the wrist. I am embarrassed to be a Democrat."

"I'm responding to the person who called in about Paul Swartz and his money-making efforts. Concerning weekly and bi-weekly pay. The person's comment as to where is Ron Bowers now. Well, Ron Bowers is out of office. And all that Ron Bowers has left us is the jewel of that commissioners' time, the outlet malls, that I wish they would take away with them for those of us that lived here our lives. If that is the best this county commissioner can do, no wonder this county has never gone any further. Thank you."

"Hi, I really like Mail Call. And I would like to know, what exactly is chair caning? Thank you."

"I would like to know a thing about our president. He lends money to all different countries but I've never seen anything where they have returned that money. I would like an answer to that question. Thank you."

"I'm getting so sick of people wanting to move into my country, which is the United States and not wanting to learn English. You know I've got a little advice for you. Don't learn English. Go back to your country where you came from and we will both be happy. Thank you."

"I guess the people in this country have just got to the point where, as long as you don't bother me, it just don't matter. Long as I got my couple pennies and cold beer and a pack of cigarettes and an automobile, what happens around this world or right here in the United States doesn't seem to matter to people anymore. They just throw it over their shoulder. And these polls that these people take, I imagine about 60-70 percent of the people that they poll don't even vote. So how in the world could it be in the opinion of the people when you're getting 60-70 percent of people that don't even vote. Thank you."

"Yes, I'm reading Mail Call on Monday, Dec. 28. I would like to say bravo to the person that wrote, if anybody comes to this country they should speak English. Great, I agree 1,000 percent and I am foreign born that came to this country. I don't agree with bilingual education. I don't agree in a lot of things that are pulling the country apart. Keep doing the good work. Keep writing good things in the papers. Dear person, you are on the right track, God bless."
