Physicians attend medical society dinner

December 29, 1998

Approximately 50 county physicians and spouses rubbed elbows with federal and state legislators at the annual Washington County Medical Society's legislative dinner held at the Four Points Hotel on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Lawmakers in attendance included U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, Maryland Sens. Don Munson and Alex Mooney, and Dels. John Donoghue, Chris Shank and Joe Bartlett.

Following comments offered by each legislator relative to the problems faced by medicine in the waning years of the 20th century, physicians in attendance were given the opportunity to address pertinent questions to the legislators.

Chief concerns centered around the issues of medical decisions made by non-professionals, lack of responsibility for such decisions, denial of payment for medical services deemed medically necessary and inadequate reimbursement for services rendered in good faith. Questioners were assured a partial solution was forthcoming with the effective date (Jan. 1) of the recently enacted Appeals and Grievance Bill and that further legislative measures will be introduced to address the remaining concerns of physicians and patients.
