Police investigate fire that killed man

December 26, 1998

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Officials said Thursday they are still trying to determine the cause of an apartment fire that killed a man.

Neighbors in the Baker Heights apartment complex along W.Va. 9 remember Donald James Jordan, 42, as being a kind person.

Jordan could often be seen helping a disabled man who lived below him, said neighbors.

The handicapped man used a wheelchair, and Jordan often pushed him around in the complex to help him with his chores, said Cyndi Hartwick.

"It's sad," she said.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is still trying to determine what caused the fire, West Virginia State Police Sgt. Rob Blair said Thursday.

A preliminary investigation showed the Wednesday night fire probably started in a couch in the second-floor apartment, officials said.

Jordan was found on the floor next to the couch, police said.
