Eight arrested in drunken driving holiday crackdown

Eight motorists were charged with drunken driving overnight Friday as part of holiday crackdown on drunken driving, according to Maryland State Police.

Statewide, troopers wrote nearly 2,000 citations and warnings, arrested 82 drivers and made 30 criminal arrests as part of Operation Holiday Cheer II.

Two hundred extra troopers across the state worked from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday to conduct the "saturation patrols," police said.


The local effort, which involved assistance from the Washington County Sheriff's Department, involved a sobriety checkpoint on U.S. 40 and Crestview Drive.

Firefighters battle Pa. mountain blaze

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Firefighters were battling a mountain fire near the Franklin and Cumberland county lines Saturday night, officials said.

The fire, along Forge Hill Road, was reported to be about 5 to 10 acres in size and was near a water treatment plant, officials said.

No other information was available at press time.
