Greencastle residents urged to boil water

December 16, 1998

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection on Tuesday ordered the Greencastle Area Water Authority to issue a boil-water advisory for the system's customers to take effect immediately, said Borough Manager Kenneth E. Myers.

The advisory will stay in effect until further notice, Myers said in a prepared release.

Water levels in springs and wells supplying the system are at critically low levels, prompting authorities to issue an earlier advisory asking customers to cut down on use until it rains.

On Tuesday morning, the northeast end of the borough had a temporary power failure that kept the water pumps out of service for an hour. About half of the system was without water as a result, Myers said.

Myers said the boil-water advisory is a precautionary measure for drinking and cooking.

Water is safe for bathing and other purposes, he said.
