Steven M. Ferris

WILLIAMSPORT - Steven Michael Ferris, 41, of Milestone Garden Apartments, and formerly of Silver Spring, Md., died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore.

Born June 20, 1957, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Mary Alice Williamson Ferris of Williamsport and the late Gordon Charles Ferris.

He previously was employed by Packaging Services Inc., Williamsport.

He was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Jason Ferris of Kensington, Md.; one sister, Patricia E. Neiker of Hagerstown; one brother, Gordon W. Ferris of Hagerstown; his companion of 10 years, Lorna J. Bowie of Williamsport; and one niece.


Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

There will be no viewing.

Ralph E. Smith

BOONSBORO - Ralph Edward Smith, 73, of 6316 Clevelandtown Road, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born April 5, 1925 in Rohrersville, he was the son of the late Roland John and Grace E. Violet Smith.

He was a former employee of Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown. He retired as a manager with Field Enterprises Educational Corp.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II, seeing action in the Philippines.

He was a member of Boonsboro Bible Church, was a former board member and Sunday school superintendent.

He was a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro and AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel E. Ford Smith, whom he married June 26, 1943; three sons, Terry L. Smith of Boonsboro, the Rev. Gerry L. Smith of Annapolis, and Jerry W. Smith of Hagerstown; two sisters, Oralee Clouser of Smithsburg and Hilda Thomas of Hagerstown; one brother, Richard W. Smith of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Private services will be held Friday. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

Amanda J. Downey

HAVERTOWN, Pa. - Amanda Jo "Mandy" Downin Downey, 26, of 1120 Bon Air Road, and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Mercy Community Hospital in Havertown.

Born Aug. 29, 1972, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Susan M. Gordon Downin of Waynesboro, Pa., and H. John Downin of Greenville, N.C.

She was a 1990 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and a 1995 graduate of Shippensburg University with a bachelor of science degree in psychology.

She was a senior project research associate with the Institute of Biological Research and Development in Blue Bell, Pa.

She attended First United Methodist Church of Greencastle and taught Sunday school, and St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Broomall, Pa.

She was a member of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in Gettysburg, Pa. While in high school she played softball, volleyball, track and basketball.

She was a member of Alpha Sigma Sorority at Shippensburg University, and Ladies Auxiliary of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 in Greencastle.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Paul Vincent Downey, whom she married Nov. 1, 1997; one sister, Monica S. Eshleman of Greencastle; two brothers, Harry John Downin II and Richard W. Downin, both of Greencastle; her stepmother, Noreen K. Downin of Greenville; and cousins.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. Pastor Richard Overcash will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.

The family will receive friends at O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Road, Springfield, Pa., on Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; and at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home in Greencastle on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Anna C. Hawthorne

Anna C. Hawthorne, 88, of 11 W. Baltimore St., who died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Home, is survived by a daughter, Mary V. Stickler of Hagerstown, and was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Custer; one brother, John Miller; and one great-grandson.

Albert J. Davies

Albert James Davies, 79, of 13532 Donnybrook Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at the Fahrney-Keedy Home in Boonsboro.

Born Sept. 24, 1919, in Turtle Creek, Pa., he was the son of the late Morgan E. and Ellen Critchley Davies.

He retired from the National Biscuit Co. in 1985 after 35 years.

He was a member of Hagerstown Presbyterian Church.
