Player of the Year - Carey Brennan, Smithsburg

One of the first things people notice when watching Brennan play is her tremendous leaping ability.

"It's her athletic ability that enables her to dominate at the net," says Smithsburg coach Jim Klein. "It's tough to defend against somebody that's 12 inches above you on the other side of the net.

"But even though she beats you to the block, her game is more than that. She has good court vision to find the open spot."

Brennan had 155 kills and 58 blocks to help lead the Leopards to a 17-2 record, a share of the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title and their first state championship since 1989.

Coach of the Year - Vicki Ritchey, Greencastle

In her 10 years as head coach, Ritchey has transformed the Blue Devils from a brand new program filled with inexperienced players into a perennial area power that builds year after year.

Greencastle was 18-5 this season, advancing to the Pennsylvania District 3 Class AA semifinals. And the Blue Devils might just get better next year. With seven varsity players returning, including All-Area selection Tabitha Eshelman, the rest of the Mid Penn Capital Division could be looking up at Greencastle in the standings.

"This was a great year for us, and things are looking good for the future," Ritchey said.
