MailCall for 12/3

December 03, 1998

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I'm just wondering where the Christmas music is on WWMD? They always had it on after Thanksgiving so I guess I'll just have to tune into a different radio station. I'll wait another couple of days and if you don't have any Christmas music by then - bye bye."

"If any of you would like to study the Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, tune into WHAG-TV from 4 to 5 in the morning for one hour. The Bible is taught verse by verse, chapter by chapter. They are currently in the Book of Judges."

"Yes, I was just calling in because I would like to know how a landlord can let a tenant stay in an apartment and the landlord knowing that this tenant has drug dealers and users in their apartment and not evict them? Just because I was late with my rent a couple of times, the landlord jumped down my throat and said that we couldn't have that. Maybe I ought to start subletting out my apartment to drug dealers and users. I'm working and struggling to make ends meet and this person isn't even working. I really don't see how this makes everything seem right but it does."

"Yes, a couple of days ago, a fellow had a message that pertained to the fact that you are more likely to be involved in an automobile accident than from a violent crime. Well, that recently changed. It's now a fact that you are more likely to be a victim of a violent crime and this is due to the fact that we have violent criminals everywhere and violent criminals are indeed much younger than they used to be. My source for this is the Learning Channel which actually said that a few days ago in a program about crime. So everybody just knows that Hagerstown is a grotesque meeting place of swine and I'm just glad that I live in the suburbs."

"Yeah, this is to the person that called in about all smokers being stupid and that they don't want to pay for their doctor bills. Well, I doubt if they are even paying their own bills yet paying for their doctor bills. And another thing, someone called in the other day about cigarette butts being all around. Well, if they would look at all the trash on the streets and around the houses and in the yards and at all the cars and stuff in Hagerstown and around their own house, they wouldn't have time to worry about little old cigarette butts. But you probably won't print this because this don't fit your liberal ideas over there at the Herald-Mail. So if you print this, fine. If you don't, fine. There's always other papers that will print it and there's always other papers that you can buy."

"This is in response to the question the other day as to whether or not the Shepherdstown Farm Market was having their annual Greens and Baked Goods sale. They are and it's Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Men's Club, which is on German Street in Shepherdstown. They will have tons of fresh wreaths and roping and baked goods and crafts and even seasonal produce. See you there."

"Does anyone have a pattern for making tiny mittens, perhaps, that's about 2 inches tall?"

"About the last NASCAR race in Japan. You're hilarious. The Earnhardts are father and son, not brothers. Like I said before, it takes more to be a champion than just winning. When you have all the money you need, all the modern technology and the money to hire the best of it all, sure, you'll win. Knowing all that, how gratifying can it be to win? Jeff Gordon's races were won with the almighty dollar."

"Hello, Mail Call. My name is Pam and I'm responding to the person about smoking. First of all, I agree. It is a stupid habit and you can kill yourself. Second of all, I don't know where they get off saying that they paid quote, 'smokers medical bills.' I pay for my own insurance and so, they don't pay any of my medical bills. And another thing is that they need to take a hard look at the tobacco companies, the people that made the tobacco years ago. I'm 45 and I started smoking unfortunately when I was 16 and they put all those chemicals in there, getting the person addicted. Yes, I'm trying to quit smoking and, by the way, I bet you don't have any bad habits, do you? I bet you're not overweight. I bet you don't gossip. Hey, I could go on and on. Have a nice day."

"Yeah, Mail Call, while I was traveling along the road between Funkstown and Boonsboro, I spotted a long piece of rope laying along the road. I stopped and picked it up and went on home. When I got home, there was a cow on the other end of the rope. Now, if I could find the person who is missing a rope, well then, the cow may well belong to that same person."

"A little known fact - the legacies of former County Commissioners Bowers, Irvin-Craig and Roulette are still with us. In this month and next month alone, Washington County will pay nearly $8 million in debt service. It is a blessing that none of these elected officials still hold office."

"Yes, this is to the person or persons who picked up my jacket at South Side Bowling Alley on Dec. 1. I'd really like to get it back as it contained my keys and my new glasses. If they really need the jacket, feel free to keep it but I'd like to get the glasses and the keys back. If you have them, please return them to the South Side Bowling Alley at the desk. No questions asked."

"Hello, Mail Call. This is to the City of Hagerstown. We're really getting tired of these black birds. We have to wash our car every day and it's awful. Something needs to be done about this. A concerned citizen."
