Theater balcony not dangerous, president says

November 30, 1998

Maryland Theatre President Pat Wolford said Monday the historic Hagerstown theater's balcony is not in danger of collapsing.

Some patrons attending a Nov. 21 oldies concert expressed concern after seeing the balcony move up and down during a performance of the song "Shout."

"It was going up and down, but people were jumping up and down," Wolford said.

Wolford said she doesn't consider that appropriate behavior, but didn't plan to post signs banning jumping up and down.

The balcony has a cantilever design that allows it to move up and down, Wolford said. There are no supports, which would block views of the stage, beneath the balcony, she said.

City Building Inspector Mike Heyser said he had not received any complaints about the balcony.
