'Nutcracker' funding OK'd

November 27, 1998

Hagerstown City Council members unanimously agreed Tuesday to donate $2,000 from the city's contingency fund to the upcoming performance of "The Nutcracker" by a local ballet group.

Lauran Clowser, president and artistic director of the Potomac Classical Youth Ballet Company, asked the council for the funding on Nov. 17. The city donated $2,000 toward last year's production.

Clowser said she didn't ask for the funding during the spring budget talks because she knew the city was undergoing financial difficulties.

If Clowser anticipates asking for funding for 1999's Nutcracker, she should ask while the city is preparing the budget, said Councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein.

About 90 of the approximately 120 children performing in the Nutcracker are from Hagerstown, Clowser said.

The performance will be held at the Maryland Theatre on Dec. 5 and 6.
