Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I'd like to congratulate all persons responsible for Smithsburg winning the state volleyball championship at Catonsville Community College on Saturday, Nov. 21. Great job, all of you. All teams playing in the tournament displayed hard work and great sportsmanship. Nice going Leopards, we're sure proud of you."

"The state was notified on Nov. 16 that Ron Bowers lost as commissioner. The paper won't be able to quote the state anymore about forcing a sewer merger between the city and the county. This was Bowers all along."

"Hi Mail Call. I'd like to let everyone know about a wonderful salon. It's called Holiday Hair in the County College Shopping Center. I was there last night and got a great haircut and the girls are very nice."

"Yes, I would like to make a request to Antietam Cable. I would like to see them get ESPN Classic Sports because I know there's a lot of sports fans out there in the Washington County area that would like to see this be added to their listings. So I just ask that this would be fulfilled. Thank you very much."

"Hi, I was wondering if anybody has noticed how dirty and unkempt the roads are leading into Valley Mall? We have a lot of new shopping areas coming in, so they better get shaped up here and get the County Roads to clean them up. There's broken glass and two hubcaps that have been there for over two months there close to the bridge. There's several pieces of Styrofoam, an old piece of board, and a bag of leaves. I think somebody had better get on that real quick. Thank you, Mail Call."

"I have some excellent advice for the person who tailgates and rides other people's bumpers. Stop now before you run up a damage bill to other people's bumpers and possible lawsuits. I've helped rehabilitate some of these people. When someone tailgates me, I hit the brakes when they get close and I keep doing this until they drop back. A few years ago, a young girl would tailgate me on the way to work and I drove her nuts. She picked a different time to go to work just to avoid me. You people that are being tailgated do what I do. Call the police in the event of an accident and be sure that you get the person on record as a tailgater."

"This is to the lady who was overcharged $16 on her Independence Card and all the nasty comments she got by complaining about it. I'm not on the Independence Card but on Saturday, I went to a store out in the North End of town and the cashier charged me for 29 New York Times newspapers at 90 cents a piece for a total of $26.10. I didn't even purchase one of them. I had started out the door thinking that what I had purchased sure cost a lot. Upon looking at the receipt I scanned down the items and, at the very end, there it was - 29 newspapers for $26.10. I went right back in and went to the customer center and showed it to the lady there and they couldn't believe it. Of course, the cashier said it was the manager's fault because I used a check and she had to OK it. Come on people. How stupid do these cashiers think we are? And you all had better believe that I got my money back - real quick! So the lady was right to complain about these cashiers. Check your receipts, people. A $26 mistake is one not to be taken lightly. Just how many others are overcharged and don't check their receipts? I wouldn't have if I didn't think it sounded a little high for my couple of items."

"Hi, Mail Call. This is to the person who said that they are going to tailgate. You do just that and the car in front of you just might stop quickly. You're in the wrong! The young drivers say to get rid of the older drivers and the older drivers say to keep the young ones from getting their licenses until they are older. Who's right? Thank you, Mail Call."

"Hi, Mail Call. This is to wish June Monninger a happy birthday on Nov. 25 from her family who loves her very much."

"The writing is on the wall. Chris Shank, your job is on the line because the groundwork is being laid. Ron Bowers will be your opponent in the next election. Watch your moves."

"Hi, we were wondering if the county police knows that the speed limit for Robinwood Drive is only 25 miles per hour? When the Sheriff's Department sits out there they don't ever arrest or pull anyone over but when the State Police sits out there, they pull them over all the time."
