Carroll S. Marshall Sr.

FUNKSTOWN - Carroll S. Marshall Sr., 86, of Antietam Village, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 25, 1911, in Bakerton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry and Mary M. Wilson Marshall.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lugretta E. Marshall, in 1986.

He was employed by Sealtest Dairy and Brakestone Foods, retiring in 1975. He then worked at the Women's Club, retiring in 1990.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Funkstown. He was a minister in Pentecostal Ministerial Association of America.

He was a member of Dixon-Troxell Post 211 Funkstown American Legion; and Liberty Lobby, Washington, D.C.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Koontz and Betty Lue Marshall, both of Hagerstown; two sons, Carroll S. Marshall Jr. and Joseph D. Marshall, both of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Marion A. Sarra Sr.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Marion Albert Sarra Sr., 77, of Shenandoah Junction, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Va.

Born May 18, 1921, in Nicandro, Italy, he was the son of the late Antonio and Mary Malira Sarra.

He was a retired conductor for B&O Railroad at Brunswick, Md.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town, W.Va.

He was a member of Elks Lodge and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Sarra; a son, Terry A. Sarra of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Scott Sarra and Matthew Sarra, both of Shepherdstown, Gail Gish of Falling Waters, W.Va., Lisa Shiley of Clear Brook, Va., and Mike Sarra of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Marion A. Sarra Jr. ; a sister, Rosie Miller; and a brother, James Sarra.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society of America, 600 Third Ave., Fourth Floor, New York, NY 10016.

Arrangements are by Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry.

George D. Yourex

George D. Yourex, 79, of 17711 Stone Valley Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 26, 1918, in Henrico County, Va., he was the son of the late Weston and Myrtle Moneypenny Yourex.

He was employed by the U.S. Air Force, until his retirement in 1979.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen Jeanette Shirk Yourex; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Yourex.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Albert L. Leaf Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Robert W. Sharp will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Friday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Phyllis J. Steele

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Phyllis Jean Steele, 70, of Greene Street, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at the home of her son in Little Orleans, Md.

Born Nov. 2, 1928, in Alexandria, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Henry and Mary Elizabeth Adams Hicks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leonard Steele Sr.

She was employed by the C.I.A. and the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va.

She was affiliated with Friends Aware, Inc. in Cumberland.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Ann Steele of Cumberland; two sons, Orrie Bruce Bayliss III and Robert Leonard Steele, both of Little Orleans; a brother, Paul Luther Hicks of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Peyton; and a brother, James Hicks.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert L. Semler

WILLIAMSPORT - Robert Lewis Semler, 86, of Bower Avenue, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 6, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Lewis Edward and Ellen Blanche Barnes Semler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Frances Semler, in 1991.

He was a self-employed mason for 35 years.
