Councilman says house without parking shouldn't be bought

November 23, 1998

Hagerstown City Councilman J. Wallace McClure said the city shouldn't buy houses to rehabilitate and resell if they don't come with off-street parking.

McClure was the sole dissenter in a 4-1 vote last Tuesday to introduce a law to buy the house at 211 N. Mulberry St. for $29,000. The council still has to adopt the law.

McClure said the house could be difficult to resell without off-street parking, making it a bad investment.

The lack of off-street parking is a problem in many city neighborhoods.

Councilman William M. Breichner said the house will continue to be a blight on the neighborhood with or without off-street parking if the city doesn't buy it and fix it up.

The neighborhood would be better off if the house were fixed to meet the property code and someone was living there, Breichner said.
