Hearing set for police reaccreditation

November 19, 1998

A public hearing will be held on Jan. 25, 1999, in Hagerstown City Hall concerning the reaccreditation of the Hagerstown Police Department, officials said.

The hearing gives the public a chance to comment on the performance of city police before the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

The 7 p.m. hearing will be held in Council Chambers on the second floor.

The commission assessors also will accept telephone calls for public comment on the department's performance between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999.

The police department was accredited in March 1994, said Lt. Roy Cave. To be reaccredited the department must meet hundreds of standards, he said.

By being accredited, the city police department saves $10,000 a year in liability insurance and assures up-to-date written policies and procedures, Cave said.

The reaccreditation cycle is being shortened from five years to three years, so the city's next reaccreditation will be in March 2002, he said.
