MailCall for 11/13

November 13, 1998

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I'd like to call someone's attention to the ad that was in Monday's paper regarding trash collection. It says that you are going to pick up paper on Wednesday, Nov. 11. That is incorrect. It also says to put out garbage and paper recycling after 4 p.m. on the day of pickup. If I set my garbage out after 4 p.m. on the Thursday, which is the day that it is picked up, I believe that it won't get picked up since it gets picked up at like 4 o'clock in the morning. One would think that someone who calls themself the City Engineer would be able to write a better ad than that. It's not much wonder our local government is in a shambles."

"This is in response to the person who put a message in on Thursday about the SPCA and the Potomac Stray Cat Rescue. I just wanted to say PSCR has not given up on the SPCA and we have not bashed them in any way. In fact, PSCR works along with the SPCA. For instance, we encourage people to use the spay and neuter vouchers available from the SPCA. Many of our volunteers have animals that they have adopted from the SPCA and/or volunteer for the SPCA. In addition to volunteering for Potomac Stray Cat Rescue we are in a way an alternative to the SPCA because we're just another place where people can't adopt pets and we do different things from them. We trap stray cats in the area and then spay and neuter them to help cut down on the overpopulation of stray cats. I just wanted to make it clear that the Potomac Stray Cat Rescue does not have any problems with the SPCA and we do support them."

"I'm looking for a carpool partner to travel to First Nationwide Mortgage in Frederick, Md. Please call 301-733-6886. The shift is 8 to 5 and the carpool partner must be punctual."

"Thank you Mail Call. I'd like to know who is Henry Hyde to be the head of the Judiciary Committee when he himself broke up a family of five? I think he should clean up his own act and I don't think he is anyone who should be pushing for impeachment. I think he should clean up his own floor because at least the president didn't break up a family of five and I hear that Hyde did. I think the Republicans should hang their heads in shame. Thank you Mail Call."

"Hello, I lost a radio, a portable radio somewhere on the following roads, Security, Pangborn, Eastern, Northern, to U.S. 11 and Showalter Road. If anyone has found one please call and leave a message at the following numbers - 301-582-5270 or 301-432-7141."

"Concerning Veterans Day, the Joint Veterans Council and protecting the American flag. Our two senators Mikulski and Sarbanes are a disgrace. These two liberal Democrats cannot even understand the importance of the American flag. It's quite ironic that the Joint Veterans Council tends to support these liberal politicians. I wonder why that is?"

"I understand that The Herald-Mail needs something to print in the paper. Well, let's print something about these rents. $800 for a two-room home, how's anyone in the world supposed to survive? You talk about the homeless but no one does anything about it. How about a good old fashioned rent control where people can actually afford to rent? Half the houses aren't fit to live in, they're roach infested and I've seen no one speaking of that but they can insult some poor girl in the newspaper day after day, week after week. I suggest that The Herald-Mail talk about rent control and the conditions of these houses that aren't fit to live in."

"A couple of stories appeared in The Daily Mail last week that made my week. First, John Shank finished dead last in the election of the county commissioners race. He should have at the most had two votes - his and his wife. And the story about Newt Gingrich resigning. I'm also sorry to see that Ron Bowers didn't make it. He was always there when we needed him and had any problems or questions. Hope the new commissioners will do as good a job."

"Could someone please tell me what to do. What happened to Central Motors? I got my car there and it still is under warranty. Where do I go from here? Evidentally they moved without notifying their customers. If any of their employees reads Mail Call and knows what happened please call me at 301-790-3970."

"Yes, I would like to know if anyone out there makes homemade soap or has any? If so I'd like to be contacted. My number is 301-766-4640."
