MailCall for 11/12

November 12, 1998

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I would like to wish my best friend Mary Reichert a happy 40th birthday. I will never forget you."

"All of you out there that are in favor of getting these signs down for the political candidates please call in to Mail Call. Lets have them all down by this Saturday. Come on guys, get it cleaned up."

"This service will not be utilized by complaining about who won or lost the election, nor complaints regarding sports. This message is for the individuals who gather at the railroad tracks in the North End to smoke or do drugs. BEWARE - the local authorities are observing, including the residents. If we suspect any illegal activities you will be caught."

"I would like to nominate the Lioness Club for a Thumbs Down award. The staff show at the Venice on Sunday was lovely, however, it was in extremely poor taste to use the occasion to promote a shopping trip to Potomac Mills. The local businesses that provided the fashions for the shows and those that contributed the many door prizes deserve the Lioness Club's support."

"Newt Gingrich has the right message but was not the right messenger. Unlike Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich knows the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few."

"Good morning. On the Clinton situation, he is the commander of the military yet we have military personnel who have been discharged, demoted, lost pay and so forth for sexual harassment and it looks like Clinton is not going to get charged with anything. With his being commander, he should be the first to be charged. If he is not charged then all the previously other charged should get their jobs back as well as their rank back with additional pay. Thank you. I am a former retired military person and I've served my time."

"Yes, I have kittens to give away. Four small kittens that will be available within the next two or three weeks. Two females about 6 months old and a female cat that is 3 years old and they are all looking for lovable homes. Call 301-766-5704 if you are interested and if there is no answer please leave a message on my machine if I'm not available."

"I'd like to take this opportunity to wish two very special people in my life a happy anniversary. To my Aunt Nettie and Uncle Red, this message comes with my love. Your Jersey girl."

"I'd like to comment on the new TV guide that's in the newspaper. I'm ecstatic over it. I don't want to see it changed. Please keep it. I don't know what's wrong with these people that don't like change but I think this thing is the best thing that's happened in a long time to this TV guide in the newspaper."

"Hello, yes, I live in Williamsport and I just celebrated my 56th birthday this past weekend and I'd like to thank my step brothers and sisters and my mother and stepfather for showing me such a wonderful birthday. Thank you very much."

"Hello, I'd like to hear from some smokers and I'd like to challenge them to keep hold of their cigarette butts and packs from now until there is a Great Smokeout and then dispose of them in trash cans or proper places. They can snub their butts so that they won't smolder or be a fire danger but keep them off the streets. I'd like to challenge smokers to that. Hope you'll work to make our community better."

"Hi. I'd just like to leave a comment to whoever is responsible for making the days off for the Board of Education. They should be totally and utterly ashamed of themselves for not allowing these children to be off on Veterans Day. I think most people would agree to go ahead and get rid of Presidents Day other than Veterans Day. This is a day that we owe the veterans to give thanks to them and I think they should be totally ashamed of themselves."

"Hello Mail Call. Can someone please explain to me and to everyone else what is the purpose of the one hour news on the local TV channel? It doesn't make sense. Most of it is reported from the first half hour again in the second half hour. Also it's a report from the day before, too. The up-to-date news from the local area could be covered within a half hour and be completed. It seems to be a problem when the news reporters first come on the air. Their voices are weak but evidentially they do clear up and get a little stronger. The weather report is fine but why twice? Please explain."

"Hello Mail Call. I'm trying to locate a Walter Jacob Myers. If anyone knows his whereabouts, could you please call in to Mail Call and let me know. Thank you very much."
