Veterans Day activities planned

The 80th annual observance of Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, will feature a number of activities around Washington County to honor those who served their country in the armed forces.

* Col. Jean M. Shinbur will be guest speaker at the 9 a.m. ceremonies at Marty Snook Park.

Currently the commander of the 74th Troop Command of the District of Columbia Army National Guard, Shinbur's professional military career began with her enlistment in the Illinois Army National Guard in 1975.

In her civilian life, she is chief of research and development contracts and grants for the U.S. Army Medical Research Activity at Fort Detrick in Frederick.

The ceremony will feature remarks by Shinbur and the traditional wreathlaying ceremony.

* William B. Proctor, immediate past commander of the Maryland State American Legion, will be guest speaker at 10:30 a.m. at Clear Spring High School Veterans Day assembly.


Public officials as well as military representatives will be in attendance.

* Antietam Post 236, American Legion, will sponsor an event in the Sharpsburg Town Square at 11 a.m.

Col. David E. Titus, commander of the 1108th Signal Brigade at Fort Detrick, will be guest speaker.

The Boonsboro High School band will present musical selections. Refreshments will follow at the Post at 16609 Shepherdstown Pike.

* Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion auxiliary, will sponsor the traditional wreathlaying ceremony at 11 a.m. in front of the Washington County Courthouse.

Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II, a former U.S. Army military policeman, will be guest speaker.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, celebrated the end of the fighting in World War I - on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
