TJ volleyball wins its opener

FREDERICK, Md. - Michelle Dorsch had 19 assists to go with nine service points and eight kills as No. 9 Thomas Johnson defeated Walter Johnson 15-12, 15-11, 9-15, 15-4 in the first round of the Class 3A West Regional playoffs.

Kellyann Rose had 16 kills and three blocks for TJ (12-3). Jen Wilburn scored 16 service points and had five assists, while Christina Biddinger added 10 assists and eight service points.

Hedgesville 3, Martinsburg 2

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Nicki Woodsmall had 32 assists and Becca Hess added 12 kills and 16 points as No. 7 Hedgesville edged Martinsburg 15-9, 15-7, 7-15, 14-16, 15-13 in a Class AAA sectional semifinal match.


Kerri Spies and Mary Meister each scored 14 service points for Hedgesville (24-7). Erica Anders had 13 kills and Brooke Fergerson added 11 kills in the victory.


TJ boys advance to states

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Shawn Day finished second in the Class 3A West Regional cross country race, leading the boys team to a berth in the state championship.

Day finished in 15 minutes, 48 seconds. He was edged out for the win by one second by Walter Johnson's David Glynn.

South Carroll won the boys team event with 44 points. Walter Johnson finished second with 70. Thomas Johnson finished with 94 points to place third. Damascus and Linganore rounded out the top five.


M-BC Girls Basketball

South Hagerstown 48, Corning Bulldogs 17: Emily Middlekauff scored 16 points in the win for South.

Hedgesville 21, Optimist 20: Heather Maslauskas scored seven points to lead Hedgesville.

North Hagerstown 39, Hornets 37: Becky Holmes scored 18 points in the victory for North.
