N. Hagerstown could move up

New proposal places Hubs in 3A in 1999

If the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association classification committee gets its way, North Hagerstown sports teams will be playing with the big dogs next year.

And Boonsboro will become the biggest fish in its pond.

The committee released its proposed classifications Thursday and, if they are approved next month, the Hubs will jump from Class 2A to 3A in the fall of 1999.

Boonsboro, which moved from 1A to 2A in 1997, will drop back to 1A. With an enrollment of 740, Boonsboro would be the state's largest 1A school.

No other area schools will make a classification change, but several will change regions. Smithsburg and South Hagerstown will move from 1A West to 1A South, a change brought on by Fort Hill's drop from 2A to 1A. They will be joined in the South by Boonsboro.

Clear Spring, Hancock and Williamsport will remain in Class 1A West.
