Tuesday's roundup - Wildcats, Knights advance

FROSTBURG, Md. - Matt Bowman scored two goals and added three assists as Williamsport defeated Beall 5-0 in the Class 1A West quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Ryan Mease scored twice for the Wildcats (11-4). Carlos Gomez scored a goal and added two assists. Matt Porac also had an assist.

Williamsport plays at home against Mt. Savage in the regional semifinals.

Middletown 4, Rockville 3

MIDDLETOWN - The Knights scored two goals in the final four minutes to force overtime and went on to eliminate Rockville in the Class 2A West quarterfinals.


Joey Beard scored off an assist from John Meleney at the 7:19 mark of the first extra period for the game-winner.

Rockville took a 3-1 lead on a penalty kick at the 51:00 mark. Beard scored at the 76 minute mark to cut the deficit to 3-2, then fed Meleney for the game-tying goal two minutes later. Kyle Ball had the other goal for the Middletown.

The Knights (15-1) will face the winner of today's Urbana-North Hagerstown match.


McConnellsburg reaches finals

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Erin Peck had 19 service points and 23 assists to pace undefeated McConnellsburg to a sweep of first-round and semifinal matches in the Pennsylvania District 5 playoffs.

The Spartans (20-0) beat Chestnut Ridge 15-4, 15-9 in the first round before outlastin Windber 15-1, 10-15, 15-6 in the semifinals. With the victory, McConnellsburg advances to the district final against Berlin on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge High.

Gina Sipes scored 15 service points and 10 kills for McConnellsburg while Lory Baker added nine service points, 15 kills and seven blocks. Lindsey Miller had 14 kills and four blocks while Renee Beker had 11 kills and Tiffany Sipes had 24 assists.
