SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Town Councilman Russ Weaver said he was upset Monday night with a newspaper ad that could mislead people into thinking the town endorses Gov. Parris N. Glendening.
A back page ad that states "Sharpsburg Thanks Governor Glendening" ran in Sunday's Herald-Mail. The ad thanked Glendening for the Main Street improvements and preservation of open space around Antietam National Battlefield.
The ad was paid for by the Washington County Citizens for Progress, listing Cathy Ashley-Cotleur as treasurer.
The group also paid for similar ads that said other Washington County municipalities thanked Glendening.
Ashley-Cotleur could not be reached for comment on Monday night.
During Monday night's mayor and Town Council meeting, Weaver said the town's elected officials hadn't endorsed anyone in the gubernatorial race.
Glendening, a Democrat, faces Republican challenger Ellen Sauerbrey in today's general election.
