W.Va. students ... Enter an essay contest

Jefferson County, W.Va., students in grades five through 10 may enter one of the two annual essay contests sponsored by National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, through the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of Shepherdstown.

The American History Essay Contest is open to students in grades five through eight, and the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9 and 10. All Jefferson County students in public, private or home-school programs are eligible.

Topic for the American History essay is "A Naval Hero of the Early American Republic: 1789-1815." Word limit for grades five and six is 600 words and for grades seven and eight is 1,000 words.

Topic for the Christopher Columbus essay is "How would Western civilization be different if Columbus had not discovered America?" Word limit is 750 words.

Interested students should send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Mrs. Myles Cogan, P.O. Box K, Shepherdstown, W.Va. 25443. Specify which contest you are eligible for. Cogan will send you the complete guidelines.

Essays must be returned to Cogan by Monday, Nov. 30.
