Effie S. Shelley

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Effie Shrawder Shelley, 98, of 637A Lincoln Way East, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center Extended Care Facility.

Born Oct. 11, 1900, in McAlisterville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Pergin and Lizzie Varner Shrawder.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryant F. Shelley, in 1951.

She was a seamstress at sewing factories; and a homemaker.

She was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church in McConnellsburg.

She is survived by a son, Paul R. Shelley of McConnellsburg; a grandson, Scott R. Shelley of McConnellsburg; a great-grandson, Richard "Andy" Shelley of McConnellsburg; and a great-great-grandson, Austin R. Shelley of McConnellsburg.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Toisie McLaughlin, Marion Seifried and Jennie Shrawder; two brothers, Charles Shrawder and Herman Shrawder; and a son, Earl S. Shelley, in 1976.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home. The Rev. Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Goodwill Cemetery in Bunkertown at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

George E. Pheil

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - George E. Pheil, 88, formerly of 13720 Buchanan Trail West, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at The Shook Home, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 20, 1910, in Montgomery Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry C. and Viola Sites Pheil.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Beck Pheil, in 1991.

As a young man, he farmed and later worked at Fairchild Industries of Hagerstown. He was a former employee of H.R. Cordell and Seth Metcalfe plumbing companies. He was last employed by Tuscarora School District as head of maintenance, retiring in 1972 after 18 years.

He was a member of Mercersburg Sportsmen's Association. He was a former member of various bowling teams at Buchanan Lanes of Mercersburg.

He is survived by a son, Carlton E. Pheil of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Craig A. Loewen and the Rev. Duane Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

The viewing will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home; and Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Margaret H. Wilkins

Margaret Helen Wilkins, 90, of 1304 Pennsylvania Ave., and formerly of 235 Mulberry St., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Coffman Nursing Home in Hagerstown.

Born June 12, 1908, in Latimore, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Margaret Ann Herman May.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Olen A. Wilkins.

She was retired from E.J. Fennel Dress Manufacturing. She was formerly employed by Laig' Alon.

She was a member of Christ Reformed Church.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth E. Wilkins of Hagerstown; one sister, Edna Burker of Hanover, Pa.; one brother, Michael May of York Springs, Pa.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

 

Ferne J. Spurrier

WILLIAMSPORT - Ferne J. Spurrier, 94, of Williamsport Nursing Home, and formerly of 10612 Oak Tree Circle, Williamsport, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at the nursing home.

She was born in York County, Pa.

She is survived by a son, Joseph E. Spurrier of Williamsport; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine's Church, 32 E. Potomac St., Williamsport, Md. 21795; or American Parkinson Association, 10109 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mary A. Grissinger

HUSTONTOWN, Pa. - Mary Alice Grissinger, 70, of Hustontown, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born June 12, 1928, in Dublin Mills, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Ora Park Hess.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elden M. "Bob" Grissinger, in 1996. They were married Jan. 17, 1948.

She retired in 1990 after 20 years as a cafeteria worker at Forbes Road Schools.

She was a member of Dublin Mills Community Church, Hustontown.

She was a member of Forbes Road Alumni Association Scholarship Fund Committee.
