This week's top games

October 16, 1998

No. 2 Chambersburg at Cumberland Valley

  • Game time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Records: Chambersburg Trojans 6-0; Cumberland Valley Eagles 5-1.
  • 1997 result: Cumberland Valley, 14-9.

Players to watch: Chambersburg-RB Aaron Edwards, SE/DB Scott Folmar, WR/DB Andy Dangler, OL/LB Tyler Hart; Cumberland Valley-RB/DB Art Thomas, FB/LB Jesse Neumeyer, QB Joe Lauer.

Notes: A win would keep Chambersburg in first place in the new Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth Division. The Trojans share the lead with Central Dauphin, which beat the Eagles two weeks ago when they were No. 8 in the nation in USA Today.

Big Spring at No. 4 Greencastle

  • Game time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Records: Big Spring Bulldogs 5-1; Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils 5-1.
  • 1997 result: Did not play.

Players to watch: Big Spring - QB Corey Adams, WR/DB Steve Dorsey, FB Jason Failor; Greencastle - RB/DB Walter Medina, RB/LB Mike Jemison, QB/DB Billy Windle, TE/LB Greg Shank.

Notes: The winner will have the upper hand in the new Mid-Penn Conference Colonial Division. Both teams are 2-0 in divisional play ... The Blue Devils have beaten three teams this year in the Capital Division, which features larger Mid-Penn Conference schools.

Allegany at Hedgesville

  • Game time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Records: Allegany Campers 5-1; Hedgesville Eagles 3-3.
  • 1997 result: Allegany, 21-0.

Players to watch: Allegany - RB Naeem Page, WR Dan Shanholtz, QB Jeremy Strother; Hedgesville - QB Shane Moats, RB D.D. Barrett, SE Hickory Dean.

Notes: Allegany is fourth overall in the Class 1A playoff standings and leads the West region ... A loss would drop the Eagles to 3-4 and cause serious damage to their playoff hopes. Hedgesville, in a three-way tie for the final Class AAA berth, would need to beat Osbourn Park, Jefferson and Musselman in the final three weeks to get in.

No. 5 Boonsboro at Williamsport (Saturday)

  • Game time: 2 p.m.
  • Records: Boonsboro Warriors 5-1; Williamsport Wildcats 4-2.
  • 1997 result: Williamsport, 16-13.

Players to watch: Boonsboro - RB Luke Barnette, RB Chris Dankmeyer, PK Brad Palm; Williamsport - QB Ryan Grabill, WR Clint Crowell, PK Matt Bowman.

Notes: Last year's game was won in the final seconds on a Bowman field goal ... This game holds huge playoff implications. Both teams are eighth in the playoff standings - Williamsport in 1A, Boonsboro in 2A. The top 8 in each class qualify for post-season play.
