Man charged in Food 4 Less robbery

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man staying at the Martinsburg Motel was arrested Monday after a robbery at the Food 4 Less grocery store along Edwin Miller Boulevard, according to the Martinsburg City Police Department.

Police said a man threatened a cashier with physical harm if she did not comply with his demand for money at about 3 a.m.

John Christopher Acey, 40, was charged with aggravated robbery, police said.

The arrest occurred on Shenandoah Road in Martinsburg, police said.

Man faces charge of abandoning child

FREDERICK, Md. - Deputies said a 6-year-old deaf male was found alone Monday evening in a vehicle at Wal-Mart on Guilford Drive in Frederick.


The Frederick County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene by witnesses, who said the child had been alone for about 20 minutes before the boy's father, Shawn J. McClain, of Frederick, returned to the vehicle. At one point he was seen wandering around the parking lot at 5:34 p.m., deputies said.

The witnesses detained the father until officials arrived. The deputies took custody of the child, who was unharmed, and returned him to his mother.

McClain was charged with leaving a child under the age of 8 unattended.

The father was taken to Frederick County Central Booking, police said.

Woman charged with shoplifting

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A woman was arrested after store security personnel observed clothing being stolen at 2 p.m. Monday from The Bon-Ton department store in the Martinsburg Mall, according to the Martinsburg City Police Department.

Loretta Lynn Barlow, 23, was charged with battery, shoplifting, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, obstructing and forgery.

Police said a woman was working with two minors in removing items from the store.

Police also recovered $122.45 in stolen property from the woman's vehicle. The property was traced back to Sears at the Martinsburg Mall.

The woman shoved a Bon-Ton staffer during a shoplifting investigation and originally gave police a false name and address, police said.

She was awaiting arraignment Monday night by a Berkeley County magistrate, police said.

Md. man charged in theft of gun

A Fort Washington, Md., man was charged Sunday night with stealing a gun, Maryland State Police said.

Herbert Patrick Jones, 24, of 6611 Highgate Road, was charged with theft and possession of a handgun, police said. He was released on $1,500 bond.

Trooper 1st Class Russ Plante and Trooper 1st Class C.J. Barnard were sent to the Shell station on Md. 65 at about 7 p.m. after a woman reported that her handgun was stolen, police said.

The woman, Roxanne Wilson of Hagerstown, told police she spoke with Jones on the phone.

Police apprehended Jones and recovered the gun, authorities said.


Man faces drug possession charge

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Three doses of LSD were found in a car parked along Winchester Avenue early Sunday, according to the Martinsburg City Police Department.

The incident started about 1 a.m. when Cpl. C.W. Franklin saw a red Ford Ranger pickup truck pull into the parking lot of Firestone Tire and Service Center at 324 Winchester Ave.

Franklin called for help after the driver left the car, police said.

Patrolman I.P. Blackman, who was conducting a bicycle patrol, later found a man in the 400 block of Winchester Avenue, police said.

Police searched the car and found two grams of marijuana and three "hits" of lysergic acid diethylamide, a hallucinogen known as LSD, police said.

Jason E. Miller, 21, of 319A Pendleton Drive, Martinsburg, was initially placed under arrest for public intoxication, police said. He also was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, police said.
