Notes: The Applemen, now second in the West Virginia Class AAA playoff standings, are on an emotional high after sweeping the Cumberland powerhouses the last two weeks ... Jefferson will retire the jersey of James Jett at halftime.

No. 5 Brunswick at Walkersville

  • Records: Brunswick Railroaders 4-1; Walkersville Lions 3-2.
  • 1997 result: Walkersville, 20-12.

Players to watch: Brunswick - RB Chris Hill, SE-DE Frank Clements, QB Dave Zidek; Walkersville - RB John Pelletier, QB Craig Bauguess, SE/DB Lane Strobel.


Notes: Despite their loss to Middletown last Friday, the Railroaders are still third in the Class 1A playoff standings ... Walkersville is 23rd overall in Class 2A and will need to win its last five games to have any shot at the postseason.

St. James at Hancock

  • Records: St. James Saints 1-4; Hancock Panthers 1-4.
  • 1997 result: Hancock, 42-25.

Players to watch: St. James - QB Billy Keyes, WR/DB Larry Scott, WR/DB Chris Acker, RB Brandon Boger; Hancock - RB/DE Sam Hess, TE/LB David Royer, RB/DB John Allen.

Notes: As expected, defense has been a problem for the Saints. Since a one-point loss to Model School in Week 2, St. James has allowed 40, 47 and 45 points ... Hancock is only allowing 15 points per game, but its offense is producing under 12 points per game.

Smithsburg at Williamsport

  • Game time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Records: Smithsburg Leopards 2-3; Williamsport Wildcats 3-2.
  • 1997 result: Williamsport, 44-6.

Players to watch: Smithsburg - RB Darryl Clopper, RB Jeff Knable, QB Kevin Lowe; Williamsport - RB Adam Tournay, QB Ryan Grabill, WR Clint Crowell.

Notes: Clopper has the area's best rushing average per game (135 yards) and is third in total rushing yards ... The Wildcats are 10th overall in Class 1A and second in the West region behind Allegany. Williamsport finished 7-3 last season and missed the playoffs.
