Autopsy shows baby was stillborn

September 30, 1998

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An autopsy showed that the baby given birth to in secret by a Falling Waters, W.Va., teenager last Saturday was stillborn, West Virginia State Police said Wednesday.

The baby girl was found in a garbage bag by the 15-year-old girl's mother, who until then hadn't known that her daughter gave birth or that she was pregnant, said Sgt. Rob Blair.

The girl's mother took the baby and her daughter to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, where the baby was pronounced dead, according to the investigating office, Senior Trooper R.J. Elswick.

After determining the birth took place in Falling Waters, Maryland State Police called West Virginia State Police, said Blair, who said he sent Elswick over to the hospital to investigate.

Police learned the autopsy results from Maryland's Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore late Tuesday, Blair said.

Elswick will confer with Berkeley County Prosecutor Pamela Games-Neely to determine if any charges should be filed in the case, he said.
