Chamber of Commerce honors business people

Carol Moller's moment in the spotlight Thursday evening came with awards, gifts and a donation in her name to charity.

But the most special treat came when her daughter, Katie Wright, handed her a note that told Moller how proud she was to be her daughter.

"It made my whole day, my whole life," Moller said.

Moller was named the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce's Business Volunteer of the Year, the organization's highest honor, during ceremonies at the Four Points Hotel.

"It's very humbling," she said of the honor.

Moller, who has owned Carol & Company gift shop at 25 W. Washington St. for 19 years, is a tireless advocate of downtown Hagerstown.


She has volunteered for numerous committees and organizations dedicated to the improvement of the core of the city and the surrounding community, including the Downtown Assessment District, the Alexander House board of directors and the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission.

Moller said there are many opportunities today for people who want to volunteer their time to city and county boards and commissions, and other organizations that help the community. Volunteering is a good way for people to do something about complaints they might have about the community, she added.

"They can all have a say and they can all serve their time," Moller said.

The Chamber of Commerce named Farmers & Merchants Bank and Trust Executive Vice President James G. Pierne its Business Person of the Year.

Pierne thanked the organization and said he has been proud to serve the community.

"Service to the community is both a privilege and a responsibility," he said.

The chamber named Hagerstown Suns owner Winston Blenckstone its Small Business Person of the Year.

Blenckstone said he accepted the honor on behalf of other small-business owners and his staff with the minor league team.

"My staff, in my estimation, is the best staff in the South Atlantic League, and I go from the cleanup crew right up to the general manager," he said.
