CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A 1-year-old girl drowned Wednesday afternoon after she apparently fell into a swimming pool at a neighbor's house, according to Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Thomas Hansen.

Deputies believe Pashion Fletcher and her young brother wandered from their house in the Avon Bend subdivision at about 2:45 p.m.

Avon Bend is just south of Charles Town off Kabletown Road near the Shenandoah River.

The drowning occurred at a house across the street, said Hansen.

The girl's brother, who is about 4 years old, went back to his house to tell his two uncles what happened, Hansen said.

The two uncles, ages 18 and 24, had been watching the children, Hansen said. One of the uncles went to the pool and found the child, Hansen said.

The child was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 4 p.m., said Hansen.

Hansen said the drowning is being treated as accidental, and said there were no signs of foul play. He said he did not know what kind of swimming pool the accident occurred in.

Pashion was the daughter of Dawn Plauche, said Hansen.

A young man who said he was the girl's uncle declined to comment as he walked Wednesday afternoon along Bedford Drive in the subdivison.

An Independent Fire Co. ambulance responded to 118 Bedford Drive for the drowning call, officials said.
