Man charged with assault

A Washington County Sheriff's Department deputy was flagged down Tuesday around 6 p.m. by a man who claimed he was being threatened by a man with a butcher knife in the 13200 block of Maugansville Road.

Deputy Jim Holsinger went down a lane and found a man holding a knife, police reports said.

Marvin Lee Mellott Sr., 60, was charged with first-degree assault, assault with a deadly weapon and reckless endangerment.

Mellott posted 5,000 bond Wednesday.

Firefighters respond to smoky home call

The Hagerstown Fire Department was called to 66 W. North Ave. after neighbors saw smoke coming from the home on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The smoke was from food cooking on a stove, and there were no flames, officials said. The home was not damaged by the smoke.


The homeowner's name was unavailable, officials said.

Firefighters were at the home for about 10 minutes, officials said.

Generator stolen

A $1,200 Makita generator was reported stolen Tuesday from a van parked at a construction site at 1222 Virginia Ave., Washington County Sheriff's deputies said.

The generator was owned by C.D. Contractors.

Teen charged in attempted break-in

A juvenile was taken into custody Tuesday evening shortly after he was seen trying to break into the basement of a house at 13812 Pennsylvania Ave. around 7:30 p.m.

The teen was charged in the attempted breaking and entering, according to Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Price.

Stolen purse found

A woman's purse was stolen Tuesday evening while she was at The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown on West Washington Street at Prospect, Hagerstown City Police said.

The purse belonging to Cynthia Oates was found in a trash can a short distance away, police said. All the contents were intact except for $20 in cash, police said.

Police also were investigating the theft Tuesday of a Motorola cellular telephone from a vehicle at the Ramada Inn. The loss was $50.
