Mary Ellen Gingrich

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Mary Ellen James Gingrich, 77, of 54 Apple Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at her home.

Born Jan. 31, 1921, in Fulton County, Pa., near Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Thompson M. and Anna Comerer James.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. Gingrich Jr., in 1993. They were married Sept. 18, 1948.

She was a graduate of Hancock High School and a 1936 graduate of Strayer College in Washington, D.C., with a degree in business.

She had been employed as a legal secretary for attorneys Alvord and Alvord, and as an executive secretary for National Lead Paint and Varnish Association, both in Washington. She later worked at Citizens National Bank in Greencastle.

She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Greencastle. She served on the Altar Committee, as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of Women's Guild.

She was a member of Greencastle-Antrim Women's Club and Greencastle Loyal Daughters.

She is survived by a son, Jay H. Gingrich of Greencastle; a brother, Roy M. James of Clearwater, Fla.; a niece; and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by a brother, W. Scott James, in 1995.

Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Perry S. Hanson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.

Clara H. Bassett

WOLCOTT, N.Y. - Clara Harper Bassett, 84, of High Street, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Strong Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late William Lawrence Harper and Clara Anna VanVleck.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth B. Bassett; two daughters, Diane Stottler Elder of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Kathleen Bassett Nied of Easton, Pa.; a son, Richard H. Stottler Jr. of Cocoa Beach; two sisters, Adella Harper Crombach of Wolcott and Anne Harper Powers of Cocoa Beach; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wolcott Presbyterian Church, West Main Street, Wolcott. Burial will be in Butler Center Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Colvin Robertson Norton Funeral Home, New Hartford Street, Wolcott.

Thomas F. Jackson

SILVER GROVE, W.Va. - Thomas Franklin Jackson, 88, of Silver Grove, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at I.H.S. Nursing Home, Charles Town, W.Va.

Born Dec. 8, 1909, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Dempsey Vernon and Margaret Grove Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Rodgers Jackson, in 1969.

He was retired from the construction industry.

He was a member of Silver Grove United Methodist Church.

He is survived by four daughters, Joyce Jackson Cox of Ocala, Fla., Retha Cogle of Charles Town, Joy Jackson of Augusta, Ga., and Lorrella Penwell of Silver Grove; five sons, Willard, Wayne, Norman, Mervin and Ellard Jackson, all of Silver Grove; 31 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers; three grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Silver Grove United Methodist Church, Silver Grove. The Revs. Basil Day Jr. and Lester Dillow will officiate. Burial will be in Silver Grove Cemetery, Silver Grove.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Ernest D. Lizer Jr.

BOONSBORO - Ernest D. Lizer Jr., 78, of 7917 Sharpsburg Pike, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at his home.

Born Aug. 23, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Ernest D. and Agnes P. Mongan Lizer Sr.

He had been employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring after 25 years. Previously, he had worked at Fairchild Industries.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl D. Lizer; a son, David A. Lizer; and a sister, Violet Shipley, all of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Goldie Thompson, Edna Randall, Kathleen Lizer and Dorthea Lizer; and a brother, Wilbert Lizer.
