Boat catches fire on Potomac

WILLIAMSPORT - a small boat suddenly burst into flames on the Potomac River Sunday, destroying the craft, fire officials said.

A man and a woman jumped off the 18- to-19-foot boat and escaped injury, said engine Lt. Sam Horning, of the Williamsport Volunteer Fire Co.

The fiberglass boat was not as fortunate, however, Horning said.

Horning said the man and woman heard a popping sound in their V-8 engine just before their jet boat caught fire.

"Everybody just jumped in the water and swam away," he said.

The couple's children were swimming at the time, Horning said.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. about 300 yards upstream from the boat ramp off of Dam No. 4 Road.

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating what caused the engine to ignite, Horning said. He said it was the third boat fire this season, which is about average.

"It's not a common thing," he said. "It's usually just some small thing that does it."
