Berkeley Co. courthouse renovation gets conditional OK

September 19, 1998

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Martinsburg Historic Preservation Review Commission gave a conditional nod to renovation plans for the Berkeley County Courthouse, the Berkeley County Commission was told on Thursday.

The commission pointed out two minor problems with the exterior design, according to Berkeley County Engineer William J. Teach.

The commission requested railings with "an antique or historic appearance" rather than modern pipe railing at the handicapped ramps on the west side of the building, he said.

It also wanted recesses mimicking the courthouse's arched windows to be put on the side of the addition as well as the front, Teach said.

The architect said there would be no problem incorporating the requests into his design work, he said.

The project should be ready to bid by mid- to late-October, Teach said.
