Pets were allowed to "be" art and to "make" art at Wednesday's SPCA Creative Paws fund-raiser at Howard's Art Supplies and Frames, 1256 Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

A $5 admission fee was required to participate. Once inside, photographers and artists were on hand for the pets whose owners paid between $5 and $10 for each artistic venture.

In addition, the opportunity for pets to express themselves, be it with tails or paws or whatever, also was available.

"We're not really sure how this is going to work out," said Steve Burdette, a Frederick artist who was available to do some of the pet sketches.

Burdette said problems such as keeping their attention are common with "people" sketching. But with pets, there is the added challenge of stopping them from running off or fighting with other subjects.

All proceeds will go to the work of the shelter on Maugansville Road.
