Shippensburg among nation's top universities

September 12, 1998

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - U.S. News and World Report and Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine rank Shippensburg University as one of the nation's top public universities.

U.S. News ranks the university fifth among top public universities in the North, while Kiplinger's ranks it as 100th in the nation's top 100 universities.

The U.S. News ranking is based on statistics collected from approximately 1,400 accredited colleges and universities. The institutions were categorized by mission and region and then surveyed on indicators of academic excellence, including student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, alumni giving, financial resources and financial aid.

Kiplinger's rankings were based on statistics from 1,813 colleges and universities in North America.

The list was reduced to 200 based primarily on selectivity as evidenced by the SAT scores of the 1997 freshman class and the percentage of applicants granted admission.

Those 200 were further reduced based on a formula that ranked quality, taking into account graduation rates, percentage of freshman who return their sophomore year, SAT scores, admission rates, and computer and library resources.

The final 100 were sorted on those measures, along with total cost, cost as a percentage of a state's per-capita income and percentage of a student's financial need the school meets with financial aid.
