Saturday's roundup - HCC men win Shepherd Invitational

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Tim Lentz won the men's 8K race in a course-record 27 minutes, 44 seconds to lead Hagerstown Community College to the team championship at the Shepherd Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

HCC, the only non-four year school invited, won with a score of 32 to best Wheeling Jesuit by 10. Shepherd (92) finished fourth.

Wheeling Jesuit won the women's 5K competition with 23, outdistancing Catholic University (53). HCC (91) finished fourth.

Dan Carter finished 11th and Rebecca Keeney placed 29th as the top men's and women's finishers for Shepherd.

HCC volleyball team goes 1-2

GENESSEE, N.Y. - Hagerstown Community College defeated Monroe 3-0 before falling to Delaware Tech and Genessee by 3-1 scores in the Genessee Tournament.

Tera Martin had 69 assists to go with 36 digs and 28 service points in tournament play for HCC (5-4).

Molly Schoenberg had 29 kills and 18 blocks, Andrea Nelson had 23 kills, 27 service points and 40 digs, Natalie Linn had 16 kills, Britt Jones had 13 kills and 22 digs and Beth Malberg had 25 service points and 18 digs for HCC.

HCC men blank Harford

Jason Tydings and Mike Yeakle each scored goals to lead Hagerstown Community College to a victory over Harford in the Hawks' home soccer opener.

Tydings scored off an assist by Tony Gunn at the 12:25 mark of the first half for a 1-0 lead. Yeakle scored on a pass from Tydings with 10:05 remaining to seal the match.

HCC (1-0) outshot Harford, 17-10. Hawks goalie Steve Price made eight saves to earn the shutout.

T. Johnson 28, Crossland 6

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - Ricky Roberts scored one touchdown and threw for another to lead the Patriots over Crossland.

Roberts hit Leroy Ambush with a 65-yard touchdown strike, then followed it up with a 45-yard scoring run.

Patrick Truxillo and D'Andre Gibson also scored for TJ (1-1).

Curley 10, Mercersburg 0

BALTIMORE - Andre Cooper scored on a six-yard run to lead Archbishop Curley over Mercersburg Academy in the season opener for the Blue Storm.

WALDORF, Md. - Erin Ryan scored twice to lead St. Maria Goretti over Thomas Stone.

Sarah Ryan and Claire Anderson each had an assist for the Gaels (5-1).

Jefferson 4, University 0

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Bobbie Johnson scored two goals to lift Jefferson.

Jenniffer Russell had a goal and an assist and Nora Burke scored a goal for the Cougars (3-0-1). Jessica Skarzinski and Diana Durbon each added an assist.

Jefferson girls 1st; boys 4th

SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Michelle Van Horn finished in 23:12 to lead the Jefferson girls to the title at the Frankfort Invitational.

The Cougars finished with 48 points to beat Allegany (62). Laurie Rendeiro (23:52) and Leslie Lawson (23:56) finished out the top three for Jefferson.

The Jefferson boys finished fourth. Joe Keys (19:40) and Jeff Gessler (19:46) were the Cougars' top finishers.

Hampshire won the boys race.

Mercersburg wins tri-match

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Javier Arregui shot the low round of the day, a 78, to lead Mercersburg Academy to a tri-match victory at Great Cove.

Adam Yost's 83 led Hedgesville, while Raymond Kwek shot 85 to pace Martinsburg.

Team scores: Mercersburg 320, Hedgesville 352, Martinsburg 356.

Beaver Mechanical 8, Halfway 7: Adam Mowbray pitched four innings of no-hit ball and added two hits to lead Beaver Mechanical. Pat Knode and Matt Petro added two hits apiece in the victory.

Clear Spring Blast 10, Hagerstown 1: Ryan Myers had three goals and Drew Holler had two goals and an assist to lead Clear Spring (3-1). Jeremy Evereitts, Milton Stamper, Jason Mills, Jared Timmons and Brandon Forrest each had a goal for the winners.
