More than 1,000 expected at re-enactment

September 09, 1998

BOONSBORO - This weekend, more than 1,000 people are expected to flock to a Boonsboro farm to watch a re-enactment of the Battle of South Mountain and other Civil War-related events.

Organizer Russ Richards told the Town Council during a meeting on Tuesday that volunteers have worked hard since the first event in 1996 to prepare the 150-acre site, create roads and clear brush.

The farm would also serve the community for other uses throughout the year, he said.

"It could be used for Boy Scout campouts or a World War I re-enactment or Renaissance festival," he said.

"There's a lot of potential back there."

Mayor Charles F. "Skip" Kauffman, agreed.

"Recreation is one of our long-term goals. It's a nice, beautiful farm,'' Kauffman said.
