Hagerstown-Newark flights begin today

Air service between Hagerstown and Newark International Airport, which serves the New York metropolitan area, gets off the ground today.

The service will begin with a 7 a.m. flight from Washington County Regional Airport to Newark, with a 15-minute stop in Harrisburg, Pa., according to a press release from the airport.

Chautauqua Airlines Inc., operating as US Airways Express, will provide two one-stop flights from Hagerstown to Newark from Monday through Friday at 7 a.m. and noon. A Sunday flight leaves Hagerstown at noon.

Flights from Newark to Hagerstown leave Newark at 9:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. A Sunday flight will leave Newark at 5:30 p.m.

John Presburg, Chautauqua's vice president of marketing and planning, said strong community support made the Newark flights possible.

"We hope the business will grow quickly and allow us to expand the service in the near future," he said.

Local business and industry officials have asked for the Newark service for years, said airport Manager Carolyn Motz.
