Monday's roundup - Goretti nips Martinsburg in soccer opener

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Charlie Idol scored on a shot from the outside off a broken play with six miniutes remaining to seal St. Maria Goretti's 2-1 victory over Martinsburg Monday in the season-opening match for each team.

After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, Goretti's Mike Aziz scored on a direct free kick in the third quarter.

Martinsburg didn't score until Brian Burgess scored on a penalty kick in the final two minutes of the match.

Goalie Bill Cramer had 13 saves for the Gaels.


Hub City Softball

Miller Lite 22, Lenox 12: Darren Weaver went 4-for-4, including a home run, as Miller Lite won the B Division championship.

Mark Baker added two homers, while John Moyer also homered and Scott Shank was 4-for-5 with a home run.

Pinesburg Softball

Hagerstown Reps 16, Ernst Market 11: Brad Harvey went 5-for-5 with five RBIs to lead the Hagerstown Reps. Steve Presgraves and Mike Hose added three hits each.


Todd Caudell came off the bench to score the winning run in the top of the ninth.

Hagerstown Area Church Softball

Grace 10, St. Mark's 8: Mike Mowen had a home run and Brian Allen had three hits to lead Grace over St. Mark's.

Maranatha/Virginia Avenue Church of God 23, Gateway 8: Zore Cline and Greg Henesey each homered for Maranatha.

Bobby Hays had five hits, John Merbaugh had four hits and Cline, Ray Scadden and Mike Pickeral each had three hits.


Foltz scores ace

Matt Foltz, of Hagerstown, recorded a hole-in-one by using a 9-iron on the 91-yard, par-3 No. 17 hole on Monday at Yingling's Golf Center.

Foltz's ace was witnessed by his parents, Tim and Debbie Foltz.
