Detrick closes gate

August 21, 1998

FORT DETRICK, Md. - Fort Detrick is increasing security levels as a result of Thursday's strikes against suspected terrorist facilities in Sudan and Afghanistan, according to Eileen Mitchell, public affairs spokesperson.

The O'possumtown gate closed at 6 p.m. Thursday and will not reopen until further notice. Anyone entering the installation must use the 7th Street or Rosemont Avenue gates.

"We will increase random searches of vehicles and personnel entering the installation. Any vehicle without an official Fort Detrick decal will be stopped," Mitchell said.

The additional security measures will continue until it is appropriate to return to the previous security level, she said.
