Council will be given court

August 18, 1998

District Court BuildingThis artist's rendition of the new Washington County District Court building will be shown today to Hagerstown's mayor and City Council and the Washington County Commissioners.

Designers have lowered the pyramid roof that was shown in a model of the courthouse and added a parapet, City Planner Kathy Maher said. A parapet is a wall that extends above the roof.

Construction is expected to begin after the former Brandt Cabinet warehouse on the 36 W. Antietam Street site is razed next spring.

The courthouse will replace the one at 33 W. Washington St., which some court officials have said has quarters that are too small and lacks the facilities of modern courthouses.

The new courthouse was to cost just under $6 million, state officials have said.

City and county officials are holding a joint meeting at 4 p.m. in City Hall.
