KAUFFMAN STATION, Pa. - A 6-year-old girl died Monday afternoon of injuries she suffered in a one-car accident on Clayhill Road in Antrim Township, Pa., according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Chanel Renee Beard, of 6620 Horst Road, Chambersburg, was pronounced dead at Chambersburg Hospital at 3:36 p.m., according to Franklin County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Conner. He said the cause of death was multiple trauma to the chest and abdomen.

The driver of the car, Kathlee M. Hartman, 77, of Chambersburg, was listed in stable condition Monday evening at Chambersburg Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor.

Another passenger, Ashlyn Michelle Hostetter, 6, of Chambersburg, was unhurt, according to police. Police said she was in a child safety seat and both Beard and Hartman were wearing safety belts.

Conner said Beard was the great-granddaughter of Hartman and the sister of Hostetter.

According to the report, Hartman was driving south on Clayhill Road near the Antrim Church Road intersection at 2:20 p.m. when the 1995 Buick Regal ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree head-on.

The impact caused several bushels of potatoes in the trunk of the car to push the rear seat forward, according to the police report. Police said Beard was pinned between the back seat and her safety belt.

The report did not indicate what caused the accident.
