Repaving starts next week on 14 city streets

Some Hagerstown roads will be a bit rougher starting next week as crews begin milling and repaving, City Engineer Bruce Johnston said.

Only one lane may remain open at times on the 14 streets, Johnston said. The work is expected to be done within four weeks.

Contractor L.W. Wolfe Enterprises Inc., of Myersville, Md., will mill all or parts of six roads starting Monday, including Potomac Avenue from the railroad tracks near Manila Avenue to Northern Avenue, city officials said.

On Potomac Avenue, the crew will start near Manila Avenue and work its way north, Johnston said. If the crew runs out of asphalt, Johnston said he probably would ask for more money to finish the repaving to Northern Avenue.

Milling consists of grinding about an inch off the blacktop to keep the curb close to the same level as it was before the repaving.

Other roads that will be milled are Charles Street, Chestnut Avenue, Sumans Avenue and Surrey Avenue.

Most of the 14 streets haven't been repaved in 20 to 25 years, Johnston said.

The city engineering department has a joint contract for the project with the Washington County Roads Department.

The city has budgeted $250,000 for the project, according to a memo from Assistant City Engineer Rodney Tissue. Wolfe's bid for the project was $219,500.

City officials encourage property owners on the affected streets to photograph their curbs and sidewalks before the resurfacing project begins in case damage is done to the property, Johnston said.

Streets to be repaved are:

- Charles Street from North Potomac Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.

- Chestnut Avenue from West Wilson Boulevard to Reynolds Avenue.

- Clarkson Avenue from Pennsylvania Avenue to the dead end.

- Fairchild Avenue from Pennsylvania Avenue to Beechwood Drive.

- West First Street from South Potomac Street to Summit Avenue.

- Garlinger Avenue from South Potomac Street to Summit Avenue.

- Garrett Street from Spruce Street to Guilford Avenue.

- Marion Street from Sherman Avenue to Noland Drive.

- Oxford Circle from West Franklin Street to Wakefield Road.

- Reynolds Avenue from Chestnut Street to Virginia Avenue.

- Sherman Avenue from Marion Street to the city line.

- Sumans Avenue from West North Avenue to Charles Street.

- Surrey Avenue from Guilford Avenue to Virginia Avenue.

- Potomac Avenue from the railroad tracks near Manila Avenue to Northern Avenue.

- The parking lot at Hagerstown City Police headquarters at 50 N. Burhans Blvd.

Prospect Avenue and Hamilton Lane were removed from the list of streets to be repaved this summer. Columbia Gas is replacing a main in that area and city officials don't want newly paved roads torn up, city officials said.
