People filing for unemployment insurance benefits through the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation office in Washington County will do so by telephone beginning Monday, according to officials.
Applicants have been able to file by phone or in person at the local office in the Elizabeth Hager Center on Potomac Street. As of Monday, filing will be done only by phone, said Marco Merrick, spokesman for the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
The new service will be more efficient and will give applicants more time to look for work, officials with the department said.
Officials have been phasing in the new service for about the last six months.
It is currently available in offices in Baltimore, Bel Air and the Eastern Shore, and officials hope to expand it statewide, said Merrick.
