Man charged in assault of twins

August 12, 1998

FREDERICK, Md. - A Frederick man was charged Tuesday in the sexual assault of 7-year-old twin girls he was babysitting, according to Frederick County Sheriff's deputies.

Officers said Bernard Walter Chlop, 46, of the 9400 block of Bridgewater Court West, was charged with four counts of attempted second-degree rape, two counts of second-degree sex offense, two counts of third-degree sex offense, and two counts of second-degree assault.

Chlop has been in the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on $600,000 bond since Friday night, officers said. On Monday he was taken to District Court for a bond review. The judge ordered the bond to remain the same, they said.

He remained in jail Wednesday morning, jail officials said.

All of the charges are felonies, except for the assault counts.

A conviction on the felony charges could result in a sentence of up to 20 years in prison on each count. Conviction on the misdemeanor charges would carry a maximum of six months each, officers said.

Officers said the children told their mother last Thursday that they had been assaulted. They said she took the girls on Friday to the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Montgomery County, Md., where detectives interviewed the twins.

Officers said after the interviews, the detectives went to Chlop's home, took him to headquarters and charged him.

On Monday, detectives served a search and seizure warrant on Chlop's business office and his vehicle, they said. They did not say what, if anything, was found.

Officers said the investigation showed that Chlop was babysitting the girls for their mother on the night of Aug. 5.

The girls were driven to a place of business in the 5700 block of Industry Lane in Frederick and assaulted, police said.

The girls were returned to their mother that night, police said.
